Delay gratification

How do you encourage your child to keep up the effort, to persevere, to never give up and possibly delay their gratification?

  • Start small, keep it relevant to the child, their age, and motivations.

  • Reward charts, marbles in a jar – these are a great way of showing your child how little and often can get results.

  • Find a picture of the item requested and cut it into pieces equaling the number of weeks-worth of pocket money required.

  • Talk about the end goal. If they do not want to go training or practice, remind them of why they wanted to go in the first place. Was it so they could be famous, or so they could swim all the way out to the pontoon in the local lake?
